Talloires, France — June 2023

The June 2023 Workshop of the Remaking the Global Trading System for a Sustainable Future Project took place in Talloires, France, and focused on how trade and trade policy can better support the transition to sustainable development in agriculture and food systems under the theme Ensuring Trade Contributes to Sustainable Food and Agriculture. In line with other events in the Remaking Global Trade workshop series, participants included senior trade officials, national policymakers from other ministries (e.g., agriculture, environment), business representatives and industry associations (including farmers' associations), research centers and universities, think tanks, environmental groups, and other organizations working on agricultural sustainability, food security and safety, nutrition, farm-related water quality and quantity issues, land use, and biodiversity, as well as rural poverty and development. Addressing these challenges will require governments to take action across multiple policy domains — requiring integration of food, agriculture, and trade policy along with environmental concerns and broader sustainability issues.
